Why I choose Linguistics or Literature
Linguistics and literature are actually two kinds of major that same
difficult, every bit as good as, and both of them are confusing. It is
depand on each interest. I am still confused which one that I gonna
choose. I will see how the mark that I will get in these two semesters,
which one is better. But I prefer to literary studies. My reasons maybe
not too different with others that choose literature as theirs field.
The basic reason is because I think linguistics is difficult, so
literature but that is in different style of troubles.
After learnt a little bit about linguistics in the second semester, I
have an opinion that linguistics is not far from grammar, and grammar
for me is like a math. Math is one fo my weaknesses. Nothing is
impossible as long as we want to try again and again, but so far
literature is take my interest more than linguistics.
My interest is started from the time that I came to introduction to
literary studies class. When my lecturer explained me a lot of thing
about literature, like history, what is literature, part and many
others. One thing of so many things that I have got is literature always
have relation with writing, reading and the most important is
imagination and also drama and film that have a each literary value.
Literature is like a channelization of imagination, a thing that
everyone have and I also. But not everyone want to pour it, just in a
bind in their mind. I want to show it. Literature is the way to make it
reality. In my mind literature is something that very free, and I like
freedom. It does not mean if I like literature, I can make it. Because
of that I want to be able make one or many. Until now my work that i can
produced is not good enough.
Literature for me is like a tool to enjoying life, all at once to
looking for satisfaction about anything that I can not find in real
world. Through literature, whether that I see, hear, and read I can feel
this world is so wide, and it is seems like I have so many branches of
thought that spread in over the world.
In my opinion, literature is matching with my personality. I like
reading and understanding, I like watching, I like writing, I like
imagination, and also like adopting new words from reading or watching.
The most important thing is because I can expressing what inside my mind
through writing, because I am not to able in speaking spontanously.
Writing give me several times to think before talked. Say it without shy
or nerveous, and also freely. Of course anything that I will get if I
choose literature will help me a lot to say for well.
But, in literature we should learn about linguistics because a good
people of letters must know the rules of grammar so well, so that they
can producing the best works too. But, some works does not pay attention
to rules, but still accepted by public. Perhaps that is make me like
literature more. We have to know rules so we can break it.
Many people said learn literature is like study and enjoying life at the
same time, relax. I do not know yet about it, it depand on each, are
they enjoying or not. However, because the reasons why I choose
literature are so many, then I will try to enjoying what I have already
choose.

The Theme of “The Masque of The Red Death”
“The Masque of The Red Death” is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, popularly as a black feathered literary master of the macabre. A story that tell about how creepy and scary death. The death in this story is cousing of a epidemic which very strange and of course the way how too. Nothing that can be cure or preventative. The story is like a war between two difference side. One side defend and another destroy it. We can say in this story have two main actors, the prince and the death, that in ghastly situation, and the prince manipulated the situation. He subtantively know, this is not a perfect time to happy while everybody does not happy. But he too fear and he decided to make all seems gratify and hope the death do not have a mind to tease it. But the death can not done brown, it still in that way to paralyse the victims. Finally, the war is have death as the winner. Every person have different perspective about what is the theme of this story, and I have several. Now, I would like to discuss about the theme of this story based on the opinion of several people, the connection between the theme with the elements of fiction, and the theme based on my conviction, although all the themes which I would discuss is based on my opinion.
First, after I read the story once, I got the theme delineation, but I still doubt and I read it several times more although until now I still doubt. So that I consulted to some information about the story in several refferences in the internet. When I read some of opinion about the theme of this story, most of them said that the theme is no one can escape from death. Such as the opinion of Maudlin Street a high school teacher "Death is inevitable; you can't escape, no matter how wealthy or powerful you are." And marilynn07 said the theme is “madness or insanity”1. I agree because that is the fact. We born to die. In this story the cause of the death is very nonsense, very imaginative, It’s explain in the first paragraph in the story.
No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avator and its seal-the redness and the horror of blood. There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet sains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellowmen. And the whole seizure, progress and termination of the disease, were the incidents of half anf hour.2
The death is more like a murderan who can visited all his victims anytime, anywhere, it’s show that death will come to everyone no matter how and no one can escape even how hard we try to hiding from it. We can see, the prince invited “a thousand hale and lighthearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court, and with these retired”.3 And his means is to cheating and hiding. In the story we see how the writer explain detaily the place of the prince where hiding.
... to deep seclusion of one of his castellated abbeys. This was extensive and magnificent stucture, the creation of the prince’s own eccentric yet august taste. A strong and lofty wall girdled in it. This wall had gates of iron. The courtiers, having entered, brought furnaces and massy hammers and welded the bolts. They resolved to leave means neither of ingress or egress to the sudden impulses of despair or of frenzy from within. The abbey was simply provisioned. With such precautions the courties might could take care of it self. In the meantime it was folly to grieve or to think. 4
He think he will safe, because no one can enter or leave the castle, include the red death. Nice and also nonsense way to hiding and cheating from death, methought, “and while the pestilence raged most furiously abroad, that the Prince Prospero entertained his thousand friends at a masked ball of the most unusual magnificence” 5 is also mad eventhough it show how the prince so afraid of death and then we can see how selfish does he, right.?
Beside the opinion of several people, I have notice that in the story, the plot and the theme have a connection. The plot, from introduction, climax, until the conclusion. We know that is same with human life that have introduction until the conclusion too. And also death in the story play role as the conclusion. The climax when the death, unvited guest came and take the life and everything not same anymore. No one feeling happy, no one dancing, no one playing music and no one life. Seems like they are enjoyed the happines before the sadness because they are so fear of death. And now the party onjoyed by the red death with all the darkness. Most people are think that the end of life or die is the darkest part of life. Or we can see from how the outhor describe the seven rooms detaliy, begined with the colour of the garden, window, and other ornaments, first I do not know the meaning why the outhor describe it too detail, like something very important. Eventhough it was, the chambers are like a life level, that have inception until the end. Although all the chambers are so ghottic, but the last room described apparentnly extreme and mostly countenances of those who entered. It means people life in fear of death while they enjoying the life. The last chamber was like the end of human life, and the people so worry about it, very dark, deccay, scary and undesirable. Well, although I have differend idea about this, but I always feel sad if I heard a mort of someone especially my closest people and so with my time. Now, let’s see a part of the story.
...he made his way uninterruptedly, but with the same solemn and measured step which had distinguished him from the first, through the blue chamber to the purple-trough the purple to the green-though the green to the orange-through this again to the white-and even thence to the violet, ere a decided movement had been made to arrest him.... there was a sharp cry-and the dagger dropped gleaming upon the the sable carpet, upon which, instantly afterwards, fell prostate in death the Prince Prospero.6
This part make it clearer that a powerfull person like Prince Prospero can not fight the death eventough he can do everything before he dead, it means all people will die soon or later, and be afraid about death will make life and also death unpleasant.
But, actually, I want to take a theme of the story not based on the plot or charatcer or another elements of fiction. In my opinion the theme is do not be afraid of death that certaintly will come, just prepare for it. Because I believe with the life after death, very believe. I believe death is the end of the first life and also the beginning of another life. The another life that have no end. It means death is not excactly the darkest side of life. So, we should prepare our last time to encounter our new time, so that we don’t need afraid if the death come. Actually, I thought that western people or especially non muslim do not believe with mortality, or maybe yes but not about the life after it. But through the story I can get the point that every people, no matter the religion or perseption about death, they have similar faith that death will come to whoever and in unpredictable time, place or manner.
In conclusion, one story have more than one theme, that perhaps do not realize by the author, it is depending of what aspect that the reader emphasize. From several themes which I explained before, based on several opinions, elements of fiction and my ideas, in the story of “The Masqui of The Red Death” have one main issue that in the world, everything is limited whether is good things or not, no matter who, where, when and how, no one can deny it.
